Bangladesh is a major agricultural country. Agriculture is one of the main sources of national income and the livelihood of nearly two-thirds of the people. Therefore, the importance of land resources in this country is immense. Among the basic natural resources, land is one of the natural resources which is the main source of supply of human housing, daily essential food, raw materials for industry etc., but due to population growth and unplanned use of land, this important natural resource of ours is decreasing day by day. Along with economic progress, urbanization trend, extent of industrialization, continuous expansion of roads, hospitals, educational institutions are gradually shrinking the amount of land per capita. Utilization of this important resource is largely dependent on proper planning. Therefore, it has become necessary to ensure fair and optimal use of these limited natural resources through an up-to-date planning and policy. For this purpose, the land use policy has already been enacted by the Ministry of Land.

Land Records and Survey Directorate, Land Reforms Board, Land Appeal Board, Land Administration Training Center and Comptroller of Accounts (Revenue) Department are currently working under the Ministry of Lands to provide all land related services to the people. Besides, commissioners at divisional level, collectors at district level (district administrators), assistant commissioners (land) at upazila level, union land assistant officers (tahsildars) at union level are engaged in providing land related services. The Ministry of Land is working on land development tax and revenue collection, special land management and settlement, watershed management, land acquisition and possession, land record preparation and surveying and training of land related officials/employees etc.
