Nathan Fillion has been cast as the Green Lantern in James Gunn's upcoming film, Superman Legacy. The announcement also revealed that Edi Gathegi and Isabela Merced will be joining the film's cast, alongside David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Vanity Fair was the first to report the story.
Fillion, known for his roles in Gunn's films such as The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, will portray Guy Gardner, a hulking yet likable character who has previously been played by Fillion in Dr. Horrible. Gardner's iconic red bowl haircut has been confirmed to be part of Fillion's look in the new movie.
Gathegi, a veteran of the Twilight and X-Men: First Class films, will play Michael Holt, a brilliant inventor also known as Mister Terrific. The character is part of the Justice Society of America and has a rivalry with Batman, potentially setting the stage for future DCU storylines.
Merced will take on the role of Hawkgirl, a character who has undergone many iterations since her first appearance in the 1940s. Hawkgirl is known for her use of swords, spears, and maces in combat. Merced has previously appeared in Sicario: Day of the Soldado.
Superman: Legacy is progressing well, even amid the writers' strike, with Gunn announcing in April that the movie had entered pre-production. The film will mark the beginning of Gunn and co-DC Studios CEO Peter Safran's revamped DCU, which was revealed in January. Initially, Gunn was only set to write the film, but later decided to direct as well.
