The Iraqi flag follows the design of the Egyptian flag with three horizontal stripes - red, white and black one. This is due to the fact that until 1963, union of these countries and Syria was planned. Initially, there were three green stars in the white stripe, which symbolized this future connection. In 1991, the inscription "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is great) has been added between the stars and the stars were omitted eventually. Pan-Arab tricolor has roots in the early 20th century, when Arab nations gained independence from the Ottoman Empire, and it expresses the unity of these nations. The symbolism of colors is as follows: red stands for bravery, white for generosity, black for victory, and green is the traditional color of Islam.
