In areas where the waters, such as rivers, marshes, ditches and lakes, there are still a lot of fish that can be used as a protein source. Adult catfish can grow up to one meter long. Rather squashed like a big-headed snake's head (so called snakehead), with large scales on top of head. Elongated rounded body with fins rounded at the ends. The upper side of the body from head to tail, dark, brownish or greenish black, with white lower body side. The sides streaked resembling thick surrounding environment.

Catfish have some sort of labyrinth organ (such as the catfish or etching), but more primitive amphibians that resemble the respiratory system. This ability causes catfish have adaptive capabilities of the environment that is moving or burying themselves in the mud when the water dries up. Often found catfish 'walk' on land, particularly at night during the dry season, look for other places that are still runny.

Catfish and relatives including the Old World animals, namely from Asia (genus Channa) and Africa (genus Parachanna). In Indonesia there are several species of Channa. One close relative is the cork toman fish (Channa micropeltes), the length of the body may exceed one meter and weighing more than 5 kg.
