Braids are hairstyle formed by interlacing three or more strands or hair, one of the very popular hairstyles in African countries such as South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast etc. The origin of braids can be traced back 5000 years in African culture to 3500 BC. The cornrow specifically may be the oldest braiding style. It’s stipulated that Braiding started in Africa with the Himba people of Namibia. In many African tribes, braided hairstyles were a unique way to identify each tribe. Braid patterns and hairstyles were an indication of a person’s tribe, age, marital status, wealth, power, and religion. Braiding was and is a social art. Because of the amount of time it can take (more than an hour), people often would take the time to socialize. Cicely Tyson was famously known for wearing the first cornrows on television in 1962 on the CBS series East Side, West Side. More recently in the 90s and early 2000s more braided styles were seen in mainstream media with Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice, Queen Latifah in Set It Off and Brandy in Moesha.

Women and men of all ages are getting their hair braided on a day-to-day basis. Whether it be a day you just want your hair out of your face or a special event filled with elegance, the art of hair braiding has evolved beyond the original cultural ideas. The simplest and most common version is a flat, solid, three-stranded structure. More complex patterns can be constructed from an arbitrary number of strands to create a wider range of structures (such as a fishtail braid, a five-stranded braid, rope braid, a French braid and a waterfall braid). The structure is usually long and narrow with each component strand functionally equivalent in zigzagging forward through the overlapping mass of the others. Structurally, hair braiding can be compared with the process of weaving, which usually involves two separate perpendicular groups of strands (warp and weft).

African hair braiding is very versatile: microbraids, cornrows, fishtail braids, blocky braids, black braided buns, twist braids, tree braids, hair bands, French braids and more are at your disposal. They are perfect for almost every occasion. Whether you’re in the office, at school, in the gym or even a wedding, there’s a braided hairstyle that’s ideal for you.
