The Book of Law or what is known as the Pentateuch is the first five books of Moses in the Old Testament. It is also called the “Torah” in Hebrew but Torah is not law but instructions. Torah means ‘to hit the mark’ for to sin is to ‘miss the mark.’ Therefore, the people of God in Israel were given instructions in order for them not to sin against God and obtain His blessings. And that includes the covenants made between God and the Israelites.
The Pentateuch also includes stories of the Jewish people and their relationship with God.
• The book of Genesis, the very first book of the Bible and of the Old Testament records the very beginning of the world. It contains about God’s first creations including the first mankind, Adam and Eve until men fell into sin and was separated from God. From there, the story progresses until God sent flood during the days of Noah to wash the earth from sin and promised that flood will never again destroy the world (see Genesis 6 - 9). Then from Abraham, the Genesis account ended with the death of Joseph, son of Jacob wherein the descendants of Abraham, the Israelites were all in the land of Egypt and fell into great slavery forgetting what Joseph had done for the nation.
• The book of Exodus begins with the slavery of the Israelites in Egypt, and Moses called by God to deliver His people from the oppressions of the Pharaoh. It is in this book where God’s mighty power and supernatural wonders were displayed the most for God said to Moses, “I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt will all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof…” (Exo 3:20 KV). Among the famous miracles God did through Moses was the parting of the red sea and the ten plagues sent by God in the land of Egypt.
• The book of Leviticus focuses on holiness of the Jewish community, and that holiness is a lifestyle set apart for God through worship in the form of offerings, sacrifices and obedience to God’s law. This book contains the laws of God such as Moral and Ceremonial laws (Lev 19), Laws of Sexual Morality (Lev 18), Offerings that are accepted and not accepted before God (Lev 22), etc. It is also in this book which includes the Feasts to be celebrated by the Jewish community in remembrance of God delivering them from slavery in Egypt. Some of the feasts are the Passover and Unleavened Bread, the feast of Firstfruits, The feast of Trumpets, The Feast of Tabernacles, etc.
• The book of Numbers contains the journey of the Israelites from the wilderness (Kadesh Barnea) to the Promised Land. Among the famous stories in this book is the forty years wandering of the Israelites in the wilderness, the miracles of God through Moses, and the story of Balaam. The book ended with the Israelites finally entering the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua.
• The book of Deuteronomy, the last of the Pentateuch and the fifth book of Moses contains repetition of the laws of Moses mentioned in Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers as Moses’ last speech to the nation of Israel. It was at this moment that only two men, Joshua and Caleb, were able to enter the Promised Land among the generation of the Israelites who escaped from the land of Egypt. The law was emphasized once again in this book for the sake of the next generation.
