Before I tell you about flooring for home gyms I would like to tell you about an incident, in fact, an accident, that one of my friends met with last week. He was a hardcore fitness freak and somehow could not join a health club or gym due to office hours. So he decided to exercise at home and bought all types of equipment, to make his own gym at home. He created a good atmosphere in the home gym by hanging photos and pictures of body builder men to get some inspiration. But on the first day itself, he met with a severe accident when he was warming up on the treadmill. The treadmill slipped on the slippery surface and its plug came of the switch when he was running in full speed. He fell right on his face damaging his shoulders and knees as well.
Such incidents are very common at home gyms where owners neglect one of the important factors when it comes to building a home gym, that is flooring. A flooring for home gym has to be stable, durable, and strong. As gym flooring has to go through a lot of wear and tear, it has to be long-lasting and it also needs to be sturdy, so that it can bear the weight of the exercise equipment and other machinery as well. And while performing exercises one needs to be static in order to refrain from slipping off and the same stands true for the various other equipment as well. And there is only one flooring that is highly and widely recommended for home gyms. To know more about it, read further.
Gym Floors for Home
According to the experts, rubber flooring is the best and probably the only option when it comes to best flooring for home gyms. Rubber material provides the necessary stability, strength, and durability to the home gym which reduces the chances of accidents and injuries. There are two types of rubber flooring that one can go for. The first one is rubber tiles, which can be installed in the room like other tiles. You can go for these tiles if there is no flooring in the room at all. But if you have already installed the usual tiles and do not have the budget to remove them and replace with rubber tiles then you can go for rubber tile roll. Rubber rolls are preferred by many people as they can be easily placed on the existing flooring. The process of laying rubber rolls is more like laying a carpet in the room.
Apart from rubber flooring there are many other home gym flooring options that you can experiment with, such as, wood flooring, vinyl flooring, and carpet tile flooring, etc. These options are ideal for people who workout once in a while or who perform floor exercises more than the machine or equipment exercises. For someone who perform only floor exercises or yoga then vinyl or carpet tile flooring is enough. But, if you want a foll fledged gym in the house then rubber flooring is the only option.
Things to Consider While Choosing Rubber Flooring
Thickness of the Rubber Flooring: You must check the thickness of the rubber flooring. If you have heavy weight machinery then go for thicker rubber tiles or rolls, as they can withstand the weight aptly.
Color of the Rubber Flooring: You also have to choose the right color of the rubber flooring. There is a wide range of colors you can choose from that can suit the overall decoration of the home gym you are designing.
Check the stability of the Rubber Flooring: You must crosscheck if the gym equipment rests on the flooring properly. It is advisable to mark the footprints of the equipment on the floor and secure its location well.
