Fruit and vegetable carving in several countries has been a tradition and highly cultivated art. Not only is the taste and aroma of a dish important but also the visual appeal. Serving food attractively is a skill that has been practiced for centuries in advanced country. In developed country food presentation has been elevated to the status of an art which can require years of study and practice. Pumpkins, melons, pineapples, and papayas are carved into traditional designs and hallowed out to become containers for fruit salads, hot dishes and sauces. Vegetables are carved into flowers, leaves and even fish and crab shapes and eaten both raw and cooked. Fruits including apples, papayas, and watermelons are transformed into works of art and craft project.

The highest of these palatial arts and crafts was considered to be the carving of fruits and vegetables, where ordinary produce such as cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons, tomatoes and onions were transformed into miniature animals, birds, life-size flowers and serving containers.

Some people perform fruit carving professionally as both art and craft. Some chefs utilize fruit carving as a culinary technique of decoration ideas of foods. Once fruit carvers have mastered the techniques past the intermediate stage and become professionals, they can price their services to restaurants, professional caterers, hotels and resorts. Professional fruit knife carvers can also create centerpieces and displays for various events, such as parties and wedding receptions. On a smaller scale, fruit carvers can present a dish with decorative garnishing to add an aesthetically pleasing experience to their viewers.

Before having a fruit carving, the necessary materials must be gathered. The usual process is to have the tools handy for when they are needed in one's steps towards creating a decorative food. There are two types of carvings that can be done. The first is skin fruit carving. This is when the outer skin of the fruit (or vegetable) is carved to reveal the fleshy center, where the color is different than the outer skin to create a design using the contrast between the outer skin and flesh of the fruit. The second type of carving is fruit three dimensional carving. The purpose of this DIY craft food as a particular technique of carving is to carve the fruit to into a three dimensional object of the carver’s choice. The most popular of the fruit and vegetable art project is the three dimensional design which is the floral objects. It is easy to over carve a fruit which leads to loss in nutrition, but it is always important to start off by outlining your carving on the fruit. Depending on the design that is being created it may take very little time or be more complex and use more time and concentration also different steps in the process are used for each design. Not one design is alike. An important aspect of fruit sculpture is that the fruit you carve must be suitable for the manner which one will display it. Most fruit carvings and fruit sculpture will need to be refrigerated before they are placed in the specific setting that is desired.
