Plitvice lakes is a national park in Croatia located in the central part of the country in the Litsko-Senjska and Karlovac County 9.3%. The waters of the Koran River flowing through limestone for thousands of years caused travertine barriers forming natural dams which in turn created a number of picturesque lakes waterfalls and caves.

The name "Plitvice Lakes" was first recorded by a priest from Otocan Dominik Vukasovich in 1777.

April 8, 1949 Plitvice lakes have the status of a national park and since 1979 the national park is included in the register "World Heritage" of UNESCO.

Until 1958, the park was inaccessible to tourists it was only a clearing. In 1958, Josip Movchan the director of the park, began construction of footpaths and now in addition to a wide network of decking, there are routes for diesel and environmentally friendly electric road trains ferries and pleasure boats on electric traction. In the lakes of the park is strictly forbidden to swim and in the park as a whole to organize picnics to build bonfires to walk with dogs without a leash. Such a strict order is due to the preservation of the natural balance which for many years carefully protects local ecologists.

In the spring of 1991, the territory of the park became a place of events called the Plitvice Bloody Easter the first armed clash of the war in Croatia that led to the victims. During the Yugoslav wars Plitvice lakes have often become the arena of fights. By now the park itself has been completely cleared and the tourist infrastructure has been restored and is developing intensively but mines are still found in the vicinity of the park.

The territory of the national park "Plitvice Lakes" is 29 482 hectares includes 16 large and slightly smaller karst cascading lakes 140 waterfalls 20 caves and a unique beech and coniferous forest preserved from ancient times and having the ability to self-repair. On its territory live bears wolves many species of rare birds and other animals.

The total difference between the level of the upper and lower lakes is 133 meters. The topmost lake of the cascade is fed by two small rivers which bear the names of Krn and Biel ("Black" and "White"). Plitvice lakes are one of the few places on our planet where every year new waterfalls appear which is connected with the limestone origin of the local mountains. Fallen foliage and boughs from nearby trees are quickly covered with calcephiles (the so-called "chalky plants") which dying off are stony and form solid deposits that block rivers. Water gradually eroding such "dams" forms new waterfalls.
