The nine days prior to Christmas Day, it is customary for families in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador to pray the novena of Christmas bonuses. It is a Catholic custom that has endured in the December festivities as a social event, where family members, co-workers and communities gather in social places, such as shopping malls.

The novena is made up of prayers for every day and considerations from day one, two, through the ninth. It is also accompanied by Joys and Christmas Carols. At the end it is customary to share a traditional Christmas meal.
