Snakes are a form of non-leg-walking reptile that encompass more than 3000 different species worldwide. There are more than 3,000 species of snakes on the planet, with over three species found in all places, with the exceptions of Antarctica, Iceland, Ireland, Greenland, and New Zealand.

For the most part, snakes do not eat other reptiles, but a few are known to hunt smaller species. Most snakes will eat various prey animals, but some species do specialize. Some snakes have a venomous bite that they use to kill prey before eating them.

Snakes are able to control how much venom they give off and can bite aggressively to feed, or defensively for protection. Snakes have a limited amount of venom available at any given time, and they do not want to waste it on organisms that are not prey. Most species of snakes are nonvenomous, and those that do possess venom mainly use it for killing and subduing prey, rather than for self-defense. Whether a nonvenomous snake kills using its venomous bite or its crushing, almost all snakes consume food whole, in sometimes staggeringly large portions. |

Pythons are distinguished by their upright, venomous fangs in front of the mouth, and species may be land-based or aquatic. Venomous snakes found in the U.S. include rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouth/water moccasins, and coral snakes. In the U.S., for instance, all the species of snakes with poison are pit vipers, except for coral snakes. There are some species of snakes discovered which are largely scaly, but even these species have scales on the abdomen.

While snakes are limbless reptiles, evolving from (and grouping with) lizards, there are several other species of lizards that independently lost their limbs, yet superficially resemble snakes. Nearly all snakes are covered with scales, and like reptiles, are cold-blooded and have to externally regulate their body temperature. Snakes are characterized by having a long, scaled body with no limbs, external ears, or eyes, and, like all other reptiles, are cold-blooded, or, more correctly, ectothermic. Known by their scientific name, serpentine, they are readily identifiable by their long bodies, which appear to be one head with a long tail.
